Read Error At Md2 Disk1
Thanks again. Frank June 20, 2012 HI there, just found this blog whilst researching my first NAS. If this event appears again, please back up your data and run the S.M.A.R.T. I have a DS413j for more than a year now and I was very happy about it until I traveled with it and one of the disc went out of the Owner after owner reports that when a single drive failed, WD told them to seek help from a disk data recovery firm. http://vealcine.com/read-error/read-error-in-data-read-ansys.php
I feel fairly certain that 3 of the 4 SATA drives are good, they're using nice locking connectors, I realize that doesn't ensure the cable is still good, but one disk manuel_bo04.05.2009, 19:46sorry doppelpost manuel_bo04.05.2009, 19:47Hallo, hier mal das Protokoll Information 2009/05/04 20:52:52 admin User [admin] logged in [Management] from Information 2009/05/04 20:51:01 admin User [admin] logged in [Management] from Information 2009/05/04 Run their diagnostic utility to verify failure and get a RMA number. I've been living away from home for a year now and have NAS set up in my temporary home but soon going back to permanent base. It works. Something like "#mdadm --grow /dev/sdb3 --raid-devices=3" If that fails, I'd tail syslog to find out why.

The instructions I found online were insufficient. Once that eighth second of drive hesitance occurs, the RAID controller will mark the drive "off limits". Not sure I want to go mucking about with trying to fix that until I've got a better idea of what's going wrong.Tried running SMART for disks 1 & 2, as tests to verify the drives are fine. Once I called Buffalo, I found the rep to be quick with more involved instructions. I hope it doesn't fail... Yes, very tedious to expand the volume but that's what I'm doing. Do you happen to know if using Synology Hybrid would introduce a single-point-of-failure should the entire NAS fail?

I was not able to find my spare replacement drive, so I ordered the closest current drive available but decided to bump up from 2TB to 3TB. After a reboot I have three drives supposedly unformatted. Last time I tried to start the array disk1 and disk5 showed up as unformatted. Thanks in advance for any help or assistance with where to look for solutions. http://vealcine.com/read-error/read-error-read-21-is-a-directory.php Oddly enough, the syslog is saying that disk2 is recognized and mounted.

Those errors are NOT normal, and often indicate a bad drive, or sometimes a bad cable. Before you store anything on it, I would pull it and try WD's diagnostics on it,

It's easy to just unmount the two 1Tb discs but copying the data back from the one healthy disc over network, afterwards takes forever! Reply macsynology May 22, 2011 Over the course of time all hard drives fail. I have been trying to choose a drive for my Synology NAS (both DS411j, and DS411+II are in the Amazon cart mocking me..) and researching all day. Whatever you do, do NOT press the "Format" button. First thing they mentioned on the 03/16 show was they were nuts for talking about NAS since maybe 0.1% of their audience would know what an NAS is… Second thing..

If the new drive is going into an empty drive bay and you want it setup as a new volume without data protection you don't have to change anything with the I don't really think it's a good idea to just replace disk2 since right now disk1 is showing unformatted and there should be information on it...Newest syslog... You can then setup your volumes with the knowledge that if any drive fails you can simply replace it and Synology will make it painless with no data loss.
