make sure port 22 is open in firewall. Can you confirm that sshd is running on the server? FYI the machine is a X235.

In Ubuntu, check Synaptic for what has been installed in SSH. It did not mention anything about turning any service on/off on IPcop box. The package installer should create the default version of that file. "apt-get purge" is a good method to remember when you have a balky package. I just assumed that Automatix installed all this guff, but it doesn't. Your Linux box isn't running the SSH daemon, sshd, which listens for incoming connections.
